Ready.Set.READ! COVID-19 Education Response Grant, 2020

Purpose of the Grant

This competitive grant is open to elementary schools located in and serving Berks County. The purpose of the grant is to support preparation for mitigating learning loss when school resumes in the fall, and/or training staff to apply trauma-informed practices to help serve students. The funds are to help cover expenses related to fall 2020 programming.

Criteria

  • Berks County Public Elementary schools.
  • Serves Berks County Pre-K to 3rd grade students.
  • One $5,000 maximum grant application per elementary school may be submitted.
  • Funding requests should support costs for:
    - Preparing staff to support students through trauma-informed care practices by providing training and resources for educators, guidance counselors and/or administrators.
    - Preparing for the new school year with programming to help students rebound from learning losses related to lost instructional time due to COVID closures and summer slide. 
    - Supporting parents with training and/or resources should virtual learning be required.
  • If feasible, proposed activities should include a literacy component.
  • All proposed programs must provide quantitative and/or qualitative outcomes to demonstrate impact.

Grant Process

Grant applications will be accepted, via e-CImpact* July 29-August 9, 2020. The individual school applying must have approval by their central administration, including the IT Manager if applicable.

Successful grant awardees will be notified within 6 business days of the grant close date and award payment made via electronic funds transfer to the district’s business office in the name of the elementary school awarded. Each district is required to submit ACH information for payment release.

A final report is due upon completion of the project and submitted no later than December 31, 2020 via e-CImpact. A reminder notification will be sent providing access to the final report.

Selection Process

A volunteer committee will review and evaluate the COVID-19 Education Response applications. The selection committee will be comprised of representation from the Ready.Set.Read! Board and community. Grants will be awarded based on available dollars, how well the request matches the purpose of the grant program and how the program will impact students.

Purchasing of Materials

It will be the responsibility of the successful grantees to purchase all materials and/or pay contracted fees and to submit an update of actual expenses with the final report. Any major deviation in grant spend must be reviewed with UWBC.

Final Report

It is the responsibility of the grantee to provide a final report. The final report is due no later than December 31, 2020. The report must include the data associated with the outcomes outlined in the proposal. An update of actual expenses must also be included. The report may be used to promote United Way of Berks County and to highlight the outreach in our county.
