Story Friends

Story Friends is an opportunity for corporate and community volunteers to help preschool children in Berks County develop a love of books and reading. In addition, when adults read aloud to children they model how to read with fluency and expression.

During the 2015-2016 school year, 77 volunteers read on a monthly basis to 1,085 preschool children in Head Start, PA Pre-K Counts and child care centers.

What Happens During Story Friends

After a brief orientation, volunteers spend approximately 20 to 30 minutes reading and talking with a group of children in a preschool program one (1) time during the following months: October, November, and January through April. In select programs, the volunteers also read during the month of May. Reading time is usually 10:00 or 10:30 a.m. Monday to Friday.

Ready.Set.Read! provides the book to read and then the book is left with the preschool program for their library.
